CARSON CITY (AP) — The Nevada Treasurer's Office is seeking nearly $250,000 to get the Education Savings Account program off the ground.
The state Board of Examiners approved the request in a meeting on Tuesday, but the measure still needs the approval of the legislative Interim Finance Committee that's expected to consider it next week.
The Legislature created the Education Savings Account program this spring. It allows parents to claim the majority of their child's per-pupil state education funding and use it toward private school tuition or other qualifying expenses.
The state has already received more than 1,000 applications, and expects to start awarding funds in April.
Treasurer's Chief of Staff Grant Hewitt said the money will go toward information technology upgrades needed to process applications and ensure money is being spent properly.
