CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers have approved $116,000 to get the state's Education Savings Account program started, but raised concerns about the contractor likely to build the online system behind it.
Democrats on the Interim Finance Committee voted against the plan Wednesday, but were outnumbered by Republicans.
Lawmakers grilled the treasurer's office about why the proposed contractor's Nevada business license had been revoked. Treasurer's Chief of Staff Grant Hewitt said the company had been reorganized after a divorce and was now a sole proprietorship under another name.
Democratic Assemblywoman Teresa Benitez Thompson said there were too many red flags that could end up costing the state more money in the future.
The program allows parents to claim much of their child's per-pupil state education funding and use it toward private school tuition.
