Feral Cats Win Reprieve From Sparks City Council

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Feral cats have won at least a temporary reprieve from the Sparks City Council.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reportsCouncil members approved a new comprehensive zoning ordinance Monday but not until they removed a regulation that would have made it illegal to house feral cat colonies on public or private land.

City Attorney Chet Adams was among those who argued feral cats are a liability to the city and the colonies should be considered an illegal land use.

Current Washoe County code dictates the cat colonies are allowed under certain population management regulations that require spaying and neutering as well as vaccinations.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports council members received hundreds of emails from concerned community members on both sides of the issue.

The matter is expected to surface again as an individual proposal.
