There is an excessive heat warning in effect through Wednesday as temperatures continue to climb.
The forecasted high at McCarran International Airport Monday is 110 degrees, and temperatures at Lake Mead are predicted to be anywhere from 110 to 113 degrees.
Forecasters say we should start to see somewhat lower temperatures by Thursday.
Those most vulnerable to heat include people working or recreating outdoors, people congregating in outdoor areas with poor ventilation, or people without air conditioning. Children, the elderly and people with chronic ailments are usually the first to suffer from the heat related illnesses.
Since temperatures were below normal in July, local residents may be less acclimated to the heat and more susceptible to heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
An excessive heat warning is issued when temperatures are forecast to reach dangerous levels that will stress the body and cause heat related illness if precautions are not taken.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. Friends, relatives or neighbors should check on people who may be at risk.
