Upgrades Set For Pedestrian Bridges At Strip And Tropicana

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Pedestrian bridges linking four Las Vegas casino-resorts on the Las Vegas Strip at Tropicana Avenue are getting a $26 million upgrade.

The Nevada Department of Transportation said Wednesday the renovated bridges linking the Excalibur, New York-New York, the Tropicana and MGM Grand casino-hotels will be under construction starting 2016 and are expected to be finished by mid-2017.

Agency spokesman Tony Illia says the concrete and chain-link fence structures were the first pedestrian bridges built across the Strip 21 years ago and have 130,000 people traversing them every day.

The new bridges will feature aluminum and glass similar to newer bridges on the Strip. The agency says it will add air-conditioning to glass elevators and replace all 16 escalators.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is paying for the construction.
