LAS VEGAS (AP) — A once-prominent Las Vegas doctor already serving 18 years to life in state prison for the largest hepatitis C outbreak in Nevada history has been sentenced in federal court to almost six years in prison and to repay $2.2 million to insurance companies and the government.
Dipak Desai said he was sorry and sobbed during sentencing Thursday by U.S. District Judge Larry Hicks in Reno.
The judge said he considered adding more prison time for what he called the "mind-boggling" scope of overbilling during treatment of many as 60,000 patients over the years.
He imposed the 71 months that prosecutors sought.
Desai is 65.
He'll serve his federal sentence concurrently with his state sentence for second-degree murder and 26 other charges including neglect of patients and insurance fraud.
