Nevada Regulators Asked to Reject Switch Bid to Leave Grid

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada utility regulators are being asked to reject an electricity-dependent Las Vegas data collection and storage company's bid to sever ties with the main power supplier in the state, NV Energy.

A vote by the three-member Nevada Public Utilities Commission on Wednesday comes after a recommendation that Switch be banned from producing and buying its own power.

Commission staff says a key concern is that remaining NV Energy customers would be stuck with higher costs.

The decision is likely to have a ripple effect because several big Las Vegas Strip casino companies have also applied to withdraw from the public energy grid.

Switch is one of NV Energy's biggest private customers.

It says it wants to cut costs and use 100 percent renewable energy in coming years.
