Mosquitos With West Nile Virus Found In LV Valley

Mosquitoes with West Nile virus have been found during recent sampling for the first time this year in Southern Nevada, reports the Southern Nevada Health District.

Positive tests came from the southeast and northwest parts of the Las Vegas Valley.  No humans have been reported with the potentially deadly virus. Last year, two people were infected by the virus.

The health district said people should use insect repellent when outdoors and clear out pools of standing water where mosquitos might breed.

The virus, which mosquitoes acquire by feeding on infected birds, produces mild symptoms of fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting and sometimes swollen lymph glands or skin rashes on the chest, stomach and/or back. Sometimes, though, people with the virus show no symptoms at all.
