Lawmakers Pan Bill Allowing More Leeway on Union Contracts

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers have rejected a bill that would have allowed local governments to reopen agreements with employee unions during fiscal emergencies.

Assembly members voted 20-21 to kill SB 168 on Thursday night.

The measure was designed to allow local governments to renegotiate union contracts if revenue drops more than five percent in a year, and to fence off a quarter of budgeted spending from union negotiations. The bill wouldn't have affected school districts.

Democratic Assembly Leader Marilyn Kirkpatrick spoke out against the measure before a floor vote and said it was another bill brought up this session designed to take power away from government employees.

Republican Assemblyman Stephen Silberkraus revived the bill after it was defeated and immediately tabled the measure.
