CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada committee has killed a proposed constitutional amendment that would require any tax increase on the ballot to win a two-thirds majority to move forward.
The Assembly Legislative Operations and Elections Committee voted down AJR8 in a 5-5 decision on Thursday.
Republican bill sponsor and Assemblywoman Vicki Dooling said the measure would have brought ballot measures in line with a rule in the Legislature that requires a two-thirds vote to pass a tax increase.

Proponents said the amendment would protect citizens from burdensome tax increases.
Opponents said it would make ballot measures nearly impossible to pass and said it would fundamentally change the concept of majority rule.
