LAS VEGAS (AP) - Las Vegas police plan to blanket a major north-south thoroughfare to strictly enforce traffic and pedestrian laws and raise awareness of safety issues.
UNLV Vulnerable Road Users Project chief Erin Breen says the Friday afternoon ticket blitz on Maryland Parkway will have officers looking for pedestrians failing to use crosswalks and motorists failing to yield to those who do.
Breen says there've been 14 pedestrian fatalities so far this year on Las Vegas-area roads - more than twice the number by this time last year. Three bicyclists have also died.
Breen notes the speed limit is 30 mph on Maryland Parkway from Tropicana Avenue near UNLV to Owens Avenue near Rancho High School.
That includes near several other schools, Boulevard Mall, Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center and Huntridge Circle Park.
