The Bureau of Land Management has opened nominations for a Monument Advisory Committee to help manage Nevada’s Avi Kwa Ame National Monument.

The 30-day nomination period seeks to fill 15 committee positions by the end of next month.

The BLM is looking for members, primarily from tribal nations connected to the land, to ensure diverse perspectives in the monument’s management.

The committee will also include representatives of outdoor recreation, conservation, archaeology, local businesses, local government and the general public.

This initiative follows President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’ administration efforts to protect unique landscapes in the U.S.

More than a year ago, Biden signed a proclamation establishing Avi Kwa Ame as a national monument. The designation classifies the land as spiritually and environmentally significant, and ensures continued access to recreational activities.

The 30-day nomination period for the management committee closes on August 29.
