If you’re dead set on keeping your celebration of the gentler sex to one day a year, then take the International Women’s Day #PledgeForParity and be done with it. Sure, we have a female POTUS candidate who’s committed to equal pay for equal work, but we also live in the state that’s the fifth worst for working moms, according to WalletHub. So, yeah. Still some stuff to check off that to-do list, gals.
Alas, there were no IWD events scheduled in Las Vegas. But you know what would make up for that fail? Ongoing awareness of women’s accomplishments and issues all month long. These ideas can get you started; feel free to add others. Please.
Friday, March 11, 7 p.m., Pro Cyclery Ladies’ Night
Bike maker Giant is promoting its women-specific design line, Liv, at the bike shop’s new home in Village Square on West Sahara. Although the event promises wine, cheese, bike clothes and accessories, and raffle prizes, consider attending for that other thing that will be there: your fellow female amateur athletes from around the valley.
Monday, March 14, 7 p.m., Breaking Silence: Women Writing on Crime, Conspiracy and Cruelty
Black Mountain Institute hosts this panel discussion aiming to unmask the lies that our culture perpetuates by silencing women. Writers Maggie Nelson, Eliza Griswold and Sally Denton bring their critical, journalistic and poetic sensibilities to bear in a discussion that will undoubtedly be reproduced in some form during the next presidential debate.

Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m., individual registration is $35, and superhero costumes are encouraged for this 5-kilometer run/walk starting at Ninth and Fremont streets downtown. Sunday, March 20, all day, Undie Sunday Bra Event
Caridad homeless charity and Macy’s department store are teaming up to take female military veterans and survivors of domestic violence shopping for skivvies. To make a donation, visit the Facebook page linked above or go to Big Ern’s BBQ on Fremont Street.
Thursday-Sunday through March 20, In the Next Room
Sarah Ruhl’s play about the early history of the vibrator, presented by Las Vegas Little Theatre, uses humor to address timely questions about love, relationships and female pleasure. It involves a doctor innocently inventing a treatment for so-called “hysteria” in women and experimenting with it in his laboratory while his young wife tends to their newborn daughter within earshot.
