Nevada Changes Rules For Pregnant Inmates
Nevada Changes Rules For Pregnant Inmates

Listen
AIR DATE: April 2, 2014

When a pregnant woman gives birth at the Nevada Department of Corrections, she will no longer be shackled or otherwise restrained when delivering a baby.

The change comes after a Nevada inmate -- Valerie Nabours -- was shackled by her ankles during an ambulance ride to deliver her baby in 2011.

The ACLU of Nevada was behind the effort to change the standard at Nevada prisons, and organization’s legal director Staci Pratt joins us to explain what these changes mean.
