Identifying Extraterrestrial Life Underground
Identifying Extraterrestrial Life Underground

Listen
AIR DATE: January 16, 2014

NASA has been searching for the existence of extraterrestrial life ever since it launched its first probe in space. But what if we could learn how to find ET by first looking on Earth?  In this case, it’s deep under the earth – over two miles below the surface. Dr. Duane Moser is an associate research professor at the Desert Research Institute in Las Vegas. He’s been helping NASA do just that – search for extraterrestrial life – with a project called Life Underground. Moser and his colleagues study microorganisms that live in the Earth’s subsurface biosphere. Their thinking is that if there were life on Mars or any other planet, it would most likely be preserved below the ground.
