What is the Purpose of SoN?

Our mission is to create a daily venue to link Nevada news to thoughtful commentary and discussion of controversial issues, informational topics and cultural subjects unique to the nation's fastest growing community, foster dialog between civic and business leaders, experts and other newsmakers, with the goal of developing civic engagement in listeners. KNPR's State of Nevada is a voice for community-building in Nevada.

How can I know what your topics and guests will be ahead of time?

Sign up for SONfirst, an email from Dave Berns that previews upcoming programs.

Why do you allow extreme opinions on air?

It's not our job to call someone bigoted, uninformed or malicious. On State of Nevada you hear a mix of voices from our community, and like it or not, you hear what people believe. We do not belittle or shout at our guests or callers. Bottom line, this is public radio, and you hear from the public, as well as from invited guests. We would rather know -- than not know -- what people believe.

When did the show begin?

The program first debuted in October 2003, hosted by our founding Host and Senior Producer, Gwen Castaldi.

Who is on the Production Team?

Dave Berns took over the role following Gwen Castaldi's retirement in Fall 2005. Michael Squires took over as Friday Host from Erin Neff in late 2006. He hosts our second hour. KUNR Brian Bahouth co-hosted Friday's first hour with Dave Berns as part of the Statewide KNPR's State of Nevada show from November 2007 though March, 2008. Who Pays for the Program?

Major support for KNPR's State of Nevada comes from a grant provided by the Nevada Community Foundation.

Our first three years 2003-2006 were supported in part by a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting that required Nevada Public Radio to demonstrate the need and viability of our ambitious daily program output. We exceeded those CPB benchmarks for audience numbers, individual member contributions and corporate support. Your support is also needed. As a member of Nevada Public Radio you play a key role in sustaining the entire Nevada Public Radio organization, including the production of KNPR's State of Nevada.
Here's how you can get involved.
