How many people really live in Elko, Nevada? It may depend on who you ask.

Directly north of Las Vegas, about 300 miles as the crow flies, Elko, Nevada, sports a population of 20,700 people.

Or does it?

The size of the city has become a legal sticking point. The city took the state demographer to court, arguing the state undercut the actual population.
