Former Coach Urging Boxers, MMA Fighters To Get Insurance

Almost as much as gambling, boxing and ring fights are associated with Las Vegas in the American psyche.

But as exciting as boxing and mixed martial arts bouts can be to watch, and as tough as the fighters seem, injuries abound.

So local fight promoters and trainers are urging fighters to sign up today for insurance through Obamacare, officially known as the Affordable Care Act.

Former UNLV boxing coach Frank Slaughter has seen his share of boxers suffer from debilitating injuries.

Years ago, he helped one fighter from Uganda get surgery to repair his eyes, so damaged from boxing he was legally blind.

But more fighters are injured who never seek help, or don't get insurance because they believe it's too expensive.

Dr. Andy Eisen, chief academic officer, Valley Health System, is helping Slaughter's effort.

Eisen has known Slaughter for years, but only recently became involved in some of the severe injuries suffered by boxers. He likened some of the injuries as similar to those suffered by people in car accidents.
