Community Of San Bernardino In Shock After Mass Shooting

The shooting deaths of 14 people at a holiday party being held in a county building in San Bernardino hit that community and the country hard.

Las Vegas has a strong connection to the Inland Empire. Many people moved to Southern Nevada from the area and it is only a couple of hours away from our city.

Matt Guilhem is a reporter with KVCR, a public radio station in San Bernardino he talked to KNPR News about the mood of the community after Wednesday's massacre.

"The mood generally is very, very guarded," he said, "I complete surprise that something like this would happen here."

He said people in the city are very on edge, even though both suspected shooters are dead.

According to Guilhem, the area where the shooting happened is cordoned off and is still an active crime scene.

"This is ground breaking territory really for everybody in this area in Southern California," he said. "We just haven't ever experienced something like this."

Guilhem said he grew up in San Bernardino and is shocked by the crime.

"This is just something that I don't think anybody would have ever remotely thought would happen here," he said, "This is such a curve ball of an event that I think that the community is still reeling."
