NV Millenium Scholarship Funds Running Out

The Gov. Guinn Millennium Scholarship program has helped more than 90,000 Nevada students attend college since it was created in 1999, but the money is running out.

The scholarship fund is built on pool of money from a national settlement with tobacco companies, and could become insolvent by 2018.  Lawmakers acknowledge there's a problem, but no bills in the Legislature fix the funding mechanism.

The office of Treasurer Dan Schwartz has prioritized the funding issue and raised alarms but hasn't outlined specific solutions.  Many point out that the $10,000 award is far from covering the full cost of tuition as it did more than a decade ago, and won't be able to meet its goal of keeping the brightest students in Nevada without major changes.
