Square Dance Gets Nod From NV Assembly

The Nevada Assembly has approved a bill that would designate square dancing as the official state dance.

Lawmakers voted 33 to 9 on Tuesday to approve AB 123 and send it to the state Senate.

Costumed dancers do-si-doed and swung their partners around during a hearing on the bill last week, and several testified that the dance helps fight the blues and build friendships among participants.

Republican bill sponsor Assemblywoman Robin Titus said that dozens of states have adopted the dance as their own, and noted that Reno will host an annual square dance festival in May.
