Reno Police To Return Early From Training Mission In Ukraine

The Reno City Council has ordered the city's police chief to bring home immediately five police officers who were on a law enforcement training mission in Ukraine.

Chief Steve Pitts assured the counsel he'll get them out of Kiev and on their way back to Reno this weekend after the council voted 4-3 Wednesday to suspend the operation.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that Mayor Hillary Schieve and several other council members were upset Pitts hadn't consulted with them before deploying the officers to the war-torn country.

They traveled to Ukraine late last month to help provide training in community policing tactics through a program with the U.S. Justice Department.

Schieve says it's her job to protect all the city's residents and she wants the officers where they belong.
