Proposal Would Change Town Advisory Boards

Laughlin and other Nevada communities are governed by town advisory boards.

The members of the board are usually appointed by county commissions. But a bill to elect those board members recently advanced out of Nevada’s Senate Committee on Government Affairs.

Currently, a town board can only suggest policies. The county commissioners need to approve those policies before they move forward, whic is the big reason Clark County Commissioner Steve Sisolak is against the bill.

He told KNPR's State of Nevada that it would be difficult to elect board members and have another elected body reverse their decision.

“It’s tough if you elect them and still make them advisory so whatever they vote on could be overruled when it goes before the county commissioners,” Sisolak said.

He notes the advisory boards are just that 'advisory.'
