Hambrick Elected Nevada Assembly Speaker

A power struggle that grabbed headlines in the months after elections has ended after the Nevada Assembly voted in new leaders.

Republican John Hambrick was elected Assembly Speaker, which is the highest position in the lower house. He had been nominated for the post after previous nominee Ira Hansen stepped down amid criticism of his past newspaper columns.

The vote was held Monday on the first day of the 120-day legislative session.

Republicans gained control of the Assembly in a conservative wave, but are sharply divided on Gov. Brian Sandoval's proposal to raise and extend $1.1 billion in taxes over the next two years. Anti-tax activists have threatened recall elections against Hambrick and others to force them to oppose the plan.
