National Cowboy Poetry Gathering In Elko Underway

What does the word "buckaroo" mean to you?

For poets, musicians and fans, it's the focus of an annual celebration of ranching culture and the rural West in northeast Nevada.

The 31st National Cowboy Poetry Gathering begins Monday and runs all week in Elko.

The Western Folklife Center says more than 55 performers from the U.S., Canada, Australia and Mexico are scheduled on seven stages at four venues.

Buckaroo is an English adaption of the Spanish word "vaquero" (vah-KAY'-roh), or cowboy.

Thousands of people every year spend a mid-winter week listening, learning and sharing the lore of the range.

Elko is a Pony Express and railroad stop about midway between Salt Lake City and Reno.

It's now a high desert Great Basin commercial, mining and cultural hub.
