UMC Gets Interim CEO

University Medical Center officials say the hospital's chief operations officer will be interim CEO, filling the vacant top spot since Lawrence Barnard announced his resignation.

UMC's board appointed Mason VanHouweling Friday.

Officials say VanHouweling has been the hospital's chief operations officer since April and held the title at two other Southern Nevada for-profit hospitals.

UMC board Chairman John O'Reilly calls VanHouweling an "inspiring and effective" leader.

Barnard, UMC's former CEO, is leaving after less than a year in the top spot to take a job with Dignity Health as president of that company's San Martin hospital in Nevada.

Barnard had also been UMC's chief operating officer before becoming CEO.
