Violence erupted in South Africa during the transition from Apartheid to democracy between 1991 and 1994, and the nation's leaders appointed Richard Goldstone to lead a commission to get to the bottom of the tension.
He and his investigators ultimately determined that rogue police officers had instigated much of the violence, and held them accountable. For his unbiased opinions and willingness to criticize all sides of South African government, Goldstone received widespread international support.
Goldstone has also led human rights investigations in places like Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia. And he has never forgotten the lessons he learned from Nelson Mandela. This weekend, he will share what he learned at the 10th anniversary of the Saltman Center for Conflict Resolution.
