UMC Closes Cystic Fibrosis Clinic, New One Opens

University Medical Center will shut down its Cystic Fibrosis Clinic, inside the Lied Clinic, on September 30 because of budget cuts, a hospital spokeswoman confirmed. But clinic director Dr. Craig Nakamura said a CF clinic will open at Children's Heart Center Nevada on Maryland Parkway about October 15.

The UMC clinic is the only facility in the region offering all of the necessary specialists under one roof. The closest nearby facilities are in Los Angeles, Phoenix and Salt Lake City.

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disorder that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Roughly 30,000 children and adults in the United States have the disease.
