McCarran Will Upgrade Runway

The longest runway at McCarran International Airport is getting an overhaul starting this fall with help from the federal government. Congresswoman Dina Titus announced this week that the Las Vegas airport landed $26 million to fund a two-phase reconstruction project.

Airport spokesman Chris Jones says asphalt on the nearly 15,000-foot-long runway will be removed and replaced with concrete, which is more durable. Construction on phase one is expected to run for six months starting in November, while a second phase will begin around the same time next year. McCarran sees nearly 20 million passengers each year.
