Summer monsoon storms have turned western Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats into a shallow lake, forcing cancelation of the area's largest annual speed event. The Speed Week trials draw competitors from around the globe who tear across the white salt sheets in cars and motorcycles, hoping to break speed records.
The Southern California Timing Association, which sponsors the race, canceled the week-long event on Saturday after deciding the ankle-deep standing water wouldn't be gone in time. The association hopes to make up for the cancelation by extending another event at the salt flats scheduled in early October.
