Increasing Clark County's sales tax to raise money for a proposed UNLV stadium was suggested Wednesday by stadium board member and Regent James Dean Leavitt. He also suggested raising the hotel room tax on the Las Vegas Strip to help fund the project. Leavitt said the university, the resort industry and all of Clark County would reap benefits from the stadium.
Costs for the project range from $523 million for an open-air, shaded venue of 42,000 seats to $833 million for a domed stadium of 60,000 seats. Opponents at the stadium board meeting said raising the sales tax would disproportionately hurt people on fixed incomes. Any tax increase must first be approved by the state Legislature.
