More than 35 percent of Americans have ongoing debt and bills that have been turned over to collection agencies. The statistic comes from a study released today by the Urban Institute and Encore Capital Group’s Consumer Credit Research Institute.
The worst percentage by state is in Nevada, where 47 percent of consumers have a debt in collection.
The average debt amount in the survey was just over $5100, and health-related bills account for about thirty-eight percent of the debts.
