Henderson Will Soon Be Able To Clean Up Mine

Federal lawmakers have passed a bill that will finally help one Southern Nevada community move forward with the cleanup of a toxic mine.

The U.S. Senate yesterday approved a bill that conveys the federal portion of the Three Kids Mine to the city of Henderson for redevelopment. It specifically directs the Bureau of Land Management to give the city fair market value, taking into account the cleanup costs which could be from $300 million to a billion.

The mine first opened in 1917 and produced manganese ore. It was also used a government storage facility. It shut down in 1961. The area covers 1,2000 acres and will eventually become residential and business development.
