Sheriff Gillespie Again Asks For More Officers

Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie has made another effort to get help from the commission to hire more officers. Last week Sheriff Doug Gillespie sent a letter to the county commission asking for more officers to handle what he says is an increase in the crime rate. Gillespie cites the homicide rate being up 20 percent from last year.

Commissioner Steve Sisolak says the sheriff sends similar requests to the county at least once a month. Sisolak says he has offered to work with Metro to balance its budget and find new ways to come up with money without raising the sales tax.

There are about 1.7 officers per 1,000 permanent residents in Clark County. At its peak Metro had more than two officers per 1,000 residents about five years ago.
