Mormon Activist Kate Kelly Excommunicated

Kate Kelly, devout Mormon, has been ousted from her church for speaking out on gender equality. Monday, leaders from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, announced their decision to excommunicate Kelly.

Kelly founded the group Ordain Women to raise issues of gender equality and help promote more women into the lay clergy. The church accused Kelly of apostasy, which is repeated and public advocacy of positions that oppose church teachings.

Kelly is an international human rights lawyer. Her case is considered the most high-profile excommunication cases since 1993 when six Mormon writers were excommunicated for challenging church doctrine. They were known as the September Six.
