Mayor John Lee Seeks To Be Active In Solving North Las Vegas' Problems

It’s no surprise that North Las Vegas continues to struggle.

The city has lost eight upper-level administrators since Mayor John Lee took office in July last year. It’s also made Movoto’s list of the nation’s most boring communities. And it’s still struggling to balance the budget.

But all is not lost in North Las Vegas. More than 250 construction jobs are coming to North Las Vegas as the Regional Transportation will spend some $18 million on transportation improvement projects.

Mayor John Lee said a 12,000 home development called Park Highlands is also being developed. And city officials have begun adopting medical marijuana ordinances.

In the face of all of this, Lee is looking to the Nevada legislature to help with the city’s financial problems in the 2015 session. Among the options is a bill that would allow cities to declare bankruptcy.

“That could be an option,” Lee told KNPR. But any bankruptcy bill would have strict state oversight, the first term mayor said.
