The Rape Crisis Center is observing its 40th anniversary this year, and the demand for round-the-clock counseling, education and advocacy services remains. Last year alone, there were 596 rapes reported in Clark County. The center also helped 1,400 victims through support groups and one-on-one counseling.
Daniele Dreitzer, executive director of the Rape Crisis Center, said those figures have been fairly consistent over the last few years. Dreitzer said rapes and sexual assaults are “still drastically under-reported crimes.”
To combat that, the center is reaching out to school children and employees on the Strip to educate them about sexual assaults. The Rape Crisis Center created a Party Smart in Las Vegas education campaign to teach bartenders and waitresses what to look out for.
“We help them learn the warning signs that a sexual assault could take place and how to prevent it,” said Gabrielle Amato, education and outreach manager with the Rape Crisis Center.
