He had a best-seller in 2004 documenting the struggles of the drug trade in the Southwestern desert, The Devil's Highway. He was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for that book. He has also written two novels detailing the life of his great aunt Teresita who became a saint in turn-of-the-century Mexico but is then exiled to the United States. And another novel that tells the story of a village whose men have all gone north to the United States looking for work ( Into the Beautiful North).
