When it comes to legalized marijuana, discretion seems to be the better part of valor in Las Vegas and in Reno, where city councils recently voted to push off the decisions on whether to allow medical marijuana dispensaries, and where. Boulder City did likewise, back in March.
Las Vegas Councilman Steve Ross, Ward 6, say the council doesn't want to map out t plans for any shops until the state issues regulations for the budding industry. A hearing on the proposed regs is set for December, and the state must implement them by April 2014.
Meanwhile, Storey County in December passed an ordinance outlawing the shops. Lyon County commissioners are considering a zoning ordinance that would do the same. The shops will sell marijuana, and foods containing marijuana, to patients who qualify on the basis of chronic pain, or certain other medical conditions. Shoppers would pay a 2-percent excise tax, the same sort of tax levied on cigarettes and liquor purchases.
