British cricket is the older cousin of American baseball, and is wildly popular in many countries that were once British colonies.
But not in the United States.
Trying to bring the sport to greater prominence in Las Vegas, though, is a group of cricket players, many of whom were born overseas or have relatives who live on the Indian subcontinent.
These players have formed the Nevada Cricket Association, whose teams play cricket matches weekly at Sunset Park. Since the park lacks a circular cricket field or a rectangular cricket pitch, the association has invested more than $1,000 in a specialized marked carpet that rolls out to form a portable pitch.
In this looking-glass world of cricket ... pitchers are called bowlers. Batters are called strikers. Bats have a flat edge. Balls are heavier and harder than baseballs. It's impossible for a striker to hit a foul ball, because the field is round and defensive players can roam instead of defending fixed bases.
