Erin Bilbray-Kohn, Democratic candidate, Congressional District 3
Erin Bilbray-Kohn, founder of Emerge Nevada, a firm that encourages and trains Democratic women to run for office, is officially running for officeherself. She announced that she will be challenging Rep. Joe Heck in Congressional District 3. That district has swung back-and-forth between Democrats and Republicans.
Bilbray-Kohn, a political consultant and mother of two, saw a myriad of problems in Washington D.C, namely a lack of concern for the middle class.
“I felt that as a middle class, small business mother, I could go up there, roll up my sleeves and make a difference for our community”, said Bilbray-Kohn.
As a political consultant, Bilbray-Kohn is displeased with the current Congress and hopes that in the future they will focus more on creating jobs.
“Right now what we’re seeing is partisan theatrics going on at Capitol Hill and people are really tired of that,” said Bilbray-Kohn.
Here’s what Erin Bilbray-Kohn had to say about key issues facing Nevadans:
Immigration Reform
“We need to make sure our borders are strong and secure, but this is the greatest country in the world. We need to have a pathway of citizenship for those who are paying their taxes, don’t have a criminal record, and are willing to learn English. Yes, there should be lots of hoops that we jump through to become a citizen, but we need to have a pathway.”
National Budget
“If I was elected, I would say that members of Congress need to take a pay reduction by 10% like most of America have during this recession. We all need to do our due diligence and we keep that pay cut until we get the budget balanced.”
Raising Taxes
“I am not going to support raising taxes on the middle class. I feel that the middle class has paid enough. I feel that we have paid the burden.”
Social Security
“My mother always says ‘If it’s not broke, don’t fix it,’ and I think we have a tendency as Americans to forget how great this program actually is. People are talking about revamping the system; the reality of the situation is that we need to create more jobs so that people are buying into social security.”
Higher Education
“So many of my fellow parents are nervous about how their kids are going to go to college. Do I feel that it is an absolute right for people to be able to attend college? Yes I do. If you are a good student, ambitious, and doing well, you should be able to get a student loan that you can afford.”
Not Living In District 3
“I was districted out by a mile this last redistricting, but this is the community that I was born and raised in. I go grocery shopping in the district, our pizza place is in the district, I get my hair cut in the district. I like to say I didn’t jump the border, the border jumped me.”
