Why Is Everyone (Else) A Hypocrite?

Psychologist Robert Kurzban says we need to rethink our understanding of the brainas the center of a unified self. When we contradict ourselves, we then say that we are deceiving ourselves or being hypocritical. But, argues Kurzban, there is no self. The brain is like a set of computer programs and in some cases it needs to contradict itself. That, he says, is an evolutionary adaption. He will be speaking this Thursday at UNLV's University Forum.
