The Promised Land

Hour 1: Think Like a Bee

It's said one-third of the food on our plates is made possible by bees. If bee populations founder due to colony collapse disorder, our very food supply may be in jeopardy. Enter Maria Spivak, a University of Minnesota researcher and MacArthur genius grant recipient who is exploring ways bees can be more resistant to threats — and how bees can teach us humans a thing or two.

Hour 2: Farm-to-Plate Innovator

Cheryl Rogowski of upstate New York is reinvigorating the American family farm by proving its value to community, social, civic and educational needs. Besides growing food, Rogowski mentors migrant farmers, operates a low-cost CSA for seniors, supplies food to soup kitchens and helps with sustainable farming programs in local communities.
