Cave Rock on Lake Tahoe is a beautiful spot. In the 1990s, it became a favorite of rock climbers just when that sport was becoming popular. Cave Rock was, however, a sacred site to the Washoe Indians. They sought to stop the rock climbing, which they saw as desecration of the site. Eventually, the US Forest Service had to mediate the dispute. And the case took years more to get through the federal courts but the eventual ruling created a new rule for protecting the sacred sites of Native Americans. We talk with the authors of the book, Cave Rock: Climbers, Courts, and a Washoe Indian Sacred Place, on the long dispute.
