The Meaning of Galileo

This is the International Year of Astronomy. In 1609 Galileo built a telescope that allowed him to see the planets. That allowed him to confirm the theory that the Earth revolved around the Sun. And that discovery reversed more than two thousand years of conventional wisdom about the earth's place in the solar system. To mark the anniversary, UNLV Philosophy Professor Maurice Finocchiaro will be lecturing on "Galileo's Telescopic Discoveries, 1609-2009: Repercussions and Lessons" at 7:30 p.m. at the Barrick Museum Auditorium on the UNLV campus. Finocchiaro joins us to explain what's really important about Galileo's role in the history of science.
