Arches Nat'l Park Reviewing Plans For Outfitters In Fiery Furnace

Arches National Park officials are halting a decision to stop allowing commercial tours of the Fiery Furnace hiking route following backlash from outfitters.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the National Park Service has proposed stopping commercial guides from taking clients into the Furnace's narrow sandstone canyons next year and giving the permits to the public.

Park officials say the move is necessary because of the difficulty in managing all 90 outfitters vying for spots along the route. There are only 25 spots available for outfitters to operate in the park each day.

Outfitters have criticized the plan as well as state Rep. Jason Chaffetz, who said it would hurt the local economy.

Park Superintendent Kate Cannon says she will hold off on the decision for further discussion on the matter.
