Aspiring Teacher At UNR Receives Guinn Memorial Scholarship

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A University of Nevada, Reno senior who's working toward her teaching degree will receive a $4,500 state scholarship named after former Gov. Kenny Guinn.

State Treasurer Dan Schwartz announced this week that Alexa Youngberg won the 2015 Kenny Guinn Memorial Scholarship. Youngberg graduated from Galena High School in 2011 and is working on her secondary education degree.

The scholarship goes to one education major in both northern and southern Nevada each year.

It was created in 2011, a year after Guinn died in a fall from his roof. It's funded by money donated to the state after his death.

Schwartz said the scholarship honors Guinn's passion for education in Nevada.
