Crews Attacking Spot Wildfires In Mountains Near Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Fire crews are attacking four spot fires believed to have been sparked by lightning in the Spring Mountains northwest of Las Vegas, while firefighters declared full containment of another lightning-caused fire that charred almost 8 square miles in remote northern Nevada.

U.S. Forest Service spokesman Ray Johnson said Wednesday that fire crews are being flown in to quell fires ignited early Wednesday in the rugged and rocky pinyon forest near Cold Creek between Mount Charleston and Indian Springs.

Johnson says the fires are still small, at a fraction of an acre.

In northern Nevada, no injuries were reported and no structures were damaged by the Annie fire north of Interstate 80 between Battle Mountain and Elko.

State natural resources spokeswoman JoAnn Kittrell says the fire spared fragile sage grouse habitat.
