Lawmakers Reviewing Abortion Parental Notification Bill

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — Nevada lawmakers are reviewing a hot-button measure that would require doctors to notify a girl's parents before performing an abortion on a minor.

Senators held a hearing on AB405 in the Senate Health and Human Services Committee on Monday.

The bill would require physicians to send a written notification to parents or guardians of a minor seeking an abortion and requires a 48-hour wait time before the procedure. Girls could seek an exception through the courts.

Supporters said that parents should know if their daughters undergo medical procedures like abortions, but Democrats opposing the measure said it could drive girls to desperate lengths to hide their abortion.

The measure passed out of the Assembly on a 24-17 vote in April and lay dormant in the Senate until revived last week.
