Find out what it's like to be a shipwreck explorer, the captain of a sinking ship, or a pirate on the run. The exhibit features hands-on interactive exhibits and computer games. Pilot a virtual submersible over a shipwreck site, operate a robotic arm to recover coins and battle a hurricane. More than 500 artifacts from famous shipwrecks are displayed.
Entries will be accepted for the seventh annual “What Makes Henderson Great!” photo contest through January 5. Examples of subjects: landscapes, landmarks, friends, animals, abstract, sports and portraits. Images must be taken within the City of Henderson, of course. There is no cost to enter and you may enter up to five images.
Winners will be revealed at the Mayor’s State of the City address on February 3. Winning photos will be displayed at City Hall and on the City of Henderson website and Facebook page,
HELP of Southern Nevada is looking for volunteers to help with Thanksgiving and Christmas programs. November 5 through December 12, you can assist clients with their applications for holiday programs. On November 23 unload and distribute frozen turkeys and December 3-14 help with the Christmas toy drive.
November is Adopt-a-Senior-Pet Month at the Lied Animal Shelter in Las Vegas for all dogs and cats 5 years and older! Adoption fees for cats are waived, and fees for dogs are $25. A $10 city license fee might apply.
The UNLV School of Music presents dozens of free classical music recitals and concerts every term. Most are by students, performing solo or in small groups. There are also performances by music faculty, guest artists, and visiting ensembles. Some things, such as their symphony orchestra and wind band concerts, have a small charge. The show features fun lessons and facts about pirate life at sea in the 1700s and 1800s. You might even be invited to participate in pirate challenges to earn your own pirate eye patch. For $5 you can dress up like a pirate and have your photo taken in front of a pirate-themed backdrop.
Works by members of the Las Vegas Crafters Guild are on display in the Summerlin Library Art Gallery through December 6. There will be a reception on opening day, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The exhibit has juried works by members of the guild who are all Las Vegas residents and use a variety of mediums.
